Reviving a well-used MTB

Introduction

A good friend of mine asked me if I could do some maintenance on his MTB. A quite old Giacomelli 26 inch workhorse that has received a fair beating. I got the bike in a pretty deplorable condition:

Nevertheless, the bike itself defintly had potential and had a lot of good quality components installed: Ritchey seatpost, stem and headset, Shimano Deore XT groupset (with integrated shifters in the brakes; I had never seen this on a MTB!).

Diagnosis and work to do

Apart from first needing a thorough clean, there was quite a lot to do to get this bike in a safely rideable and also enjoyable state.

  • Tires needed replacement
  • Brakes did not work whatsover
  • Shifting also was completely dead
  • Saddle and grips were pretty destroyed
  • Chain and cassette were rusted and worn
  • Headset bearings were really crunchy
  • Locking mechanism for the suspension was broken
